Betting Horse Racing Strategy

Anyone Bet on Horses Often?
I used to only bet on the Triple Crown races, but last week I wandered into the OTB and threw some bets down. I find it rather addicting and I understand the terms a lot more today than I did last week. Only thing is, I don’t know the best strategy, because contrary to what most people may be doing in those parlors, I’m not walking in with like $300 in my wallet..I’m walking in with like $50-$80, so I don’t really know how to approach the Betting scheme of it…Trifectas? Exactas? Longshots to win? Favorites to win?
Thanks!
I was once told that if you’re betting less than $100, you should stick to WPS and exacta wagering. If you have the bankroll to wager more, you can go into trifectas, superfectas, pick 4s, etc.
One good piece of advice that I was once given is that when you’re betting WPS (Win, Place, Show), you should tier your wagers… so if you’re betting $5 to win, also put $10 to place and $20 to show. If the horse wins, then all of your wagers win. But if your horse only finishes 2nd or 3rd, you’ve probably paid off your losing wager with your winnings from the lesser wagers… and breaking even is better than losing money… at least you survive to try again in the next race.
If you are venturing into the exotics, think about wheeling rather than boxing. If you have a good feeling about 4 horses and you’re thinking of playing them in an exacta or trifecta, think about which combinations you really need. Maybe you think the 5 and 7 could win the race, but you like a couple of longshots, the 3 and 4, to fill out the lower placings… If you box those 4 horses in a $1 exacta, you’re paying $12… in a $1 trifecta, that’s $24. But if you really think the 5 or 7 is going to win, why are you buying the combinations where the 3 and 4 are finishing on top? You’re betting half of your investment on horses that you don’t think are going to win. In the exacta, that’s $6 of your $12 investment. In the tri, that’s $12 of your $24 investment. So instead, take the 5 over the 3/4/7 and the 7 over the 3/4/5… that’s $6 for the exacta or $12 for the tri. And if you’re pretty sure that the 5 and 7 are going to be 1st and 2nd in some order, why not just take the 5/7 over 5/7 over the 3/4 for the trifecta… that wager is only $4! The biggest advice I can give you for exotic wagers is stop paying for losing combinations! If you box 4 horses in a trifecta, that’s 24 combinations and unless there’s a dead heat, you’re paying for 23 losers.

Exotic Betting $26.33 In Exotic Betting, the horseplayer takes a colorful wagering ride by learning to maximize profits by betting on a multitude of exotic wagers including the daily double, exacta, trifecta, quinella, superfecta, pick 3, 4, and 6.From the Publisher: This is not a book about how to pick winners at the racetrack, writes Steven Crist in the opening lines of this unique and long-awaited book about playing the races.Exotic Betting instead argues that how to bet is as important as who you like, especially in the 21st-century world of horse racing, where a new menu of wagers such as the superfecta and pick four have overtaken the familiar win, place, and show betting of yesteryear. Both serious and casual horseplayers will benefit from understanding the strategy and mechanics of making these complex wagers, a topic generally ignored in the literature of handicapping but now more important than ever. Crist explores each of racing’s so-called exotic wagers, including exactas, trifectas, superfectas, doubles, pick threes, pick fours, and pick sixes. Drawing on his personal experiences as a bettor and as a racing journalist and executive, Crist outlines both the common mistakes made by the betting public and some alternative approaches that can lead to more profitable returns and to greater enjoyment of an endlessly intricate and fascinating game.Crist, known as the King of the Pick Six for his exploits in that jackpot wager, also explores a wide range of practical issues, including the advantages and pitfalls of betting on the sport’s biggest events, such as the Triple Crown and Breeders’ Cup, and the unfairly onerous requirements imposed on exotic bettors by the Internal Revenue Service.Whether you’re a two-dollar bettor considering his first exacta or a high roller regularly chasing seven-figure jackpots, Exotic Betting will forever change the way you look at and wager on horse racing.About the Author:Steven Crist has been |
